Toxic Beauty

Phyllis Ellis/ Canada/2019/FR

Toxic Beauty is a feature-length documentary that follows the class action suit brought against Johnson and Johnson by plaintiffs who believe that their ovarian cancer is caused by the daily use of baby powder. Their personal story, as they fight for justice in a race against time with this deadly disease, is carefully presented. At the heart of the film is medical student Mymy Nguyen, who measures her body's chemical load from the 27 products she applies daily. Scientists monitor her disturbing results.

Interviews with lawyers, regulators, politicians, scientists, a dynamic whistleblower, and survivors illuminate the often-ignored problem of toxicity in cosmetics as well as offering safer solutions.

These panelists will lead a discussion and Q&A with the audience following the film:

JENNIFER BEEMAN, director of Breast Cancer Action Quebec. A sociologist by training, she is particularly interested in women's health and environmental health.directrice d'Action cancer du sein du Québec.
LOURDENIE JEAN, feminist activist and host of the blog L'environnement, c'est intersectional! Her interventions focus on the inclusion of the voices of racialized women in the struggle against environmental injustices.
ISABELLE PLANTE, environmental toxicologist at the Centre Armand-Frappier Santé Biotechnologie. Her research focuses, among other things, on the impact of environmental pollutants on the development of breast cancer.
